St. William Church - Photos - 2003

Two groups from St. William and St. Agnes have traveled to Mississippi during February and March 2006. Each time 13-14 people journeyed south to do relief work in the churches and homes of parishioners of the partner parishes. The destruction is still very evident and insurance is not covering any demolition work to get the churches or homes ready for renovation. From the March team, Carole Goodwin (left) and Art Baltes are shown with Pat Ladner (center), the coordinator of the relief effort for the three Mississippi churches. Pat keeps track of priority needs and matching up volunteer teams.

Efforts have focused on several projects. Safety gear was used to avoid asbestos exposure during the removal of carpet from the Pass Christian St. William Church.

Tree and brush debris has been cleared so that people can reclaim their yards and get to their homes.

at home when the water suddenly rose in waves. Liberty had her
children sitting on this table when she looked around and saw the table
floating. They all scrambled past a floating refrigerator to their pull down stairs to the attic, where they watched the water rise to within a one and a half feet of the ceiling. They were in the attic from 8:30 am till 3 pm, when the water finally went down. The group cleared this home of dry wall, ceilings, and insulation, leaving it ready for new dry wall contractors.

The ramp behind Eugene was built during the February visit. Until the ramp was built, he had been living in the shell of his mold-infested house. Now the ramp gives him access to his FEMA trailer. FEMA trailers are in almost every driveway or yard throughout the entire region. People are desperate to get their houses rebuilt because they know the trailers cannot withstand hurricane winds and the next hurricane season begins in only a few months.

Mississippi Delegation - March 2006

Following hurricanes Katrina and Rita in late summer 2005, the St. William community, along with St. Agnes, formed a partnership with three churches in Pass Christian, Mississippi. The three Mississippi churches, St. Stephen, St. Anne and St. William share the same pastor, Fr. John Ford. Several groups from Louisville have traveled to Pass Christian to meet with the pastor, deliver Home Depot gift cards, and to help as needed. (Read more...)
